Job description:
An ultrasound technologist or diagnostic medical sonographer uses special equipment to produce ultrasonic recordings of internal organs for use by physicians. They direct non-ionizing, high-frequency sound waves into areas of the patient's body. An ultrasound technologist or diagnostic medical sonographer operates the equipment, which collects reflected echoes and forms an image that may be videotaped, transmitted or photographed for interpretation and diagnosis by a physician. They also keep patient records and maintain equipment.
Work environment:
An ultrasound technologist or diagnostic medical sonographer works in hospitals and physicians' offices. Some travel to patients in vans equipped with sophisticated diagnostic equipment.
Training requirements:
An ultrasound technologist or diagnostic medical sonographer is required to complete a two-year training program.
